Copyright laws make it very difficult to do anything like make a large company like Google in Europe and privacy legislation makes making a service like the Facebook impossible AND it makes European consumers "less valuable" for advertisers. Obviously neither Belgium or the Netherlands existed back then, the Franks were a Germanic tribe that happen to come from what is now the Benelux.

  15. ​ @samuela-aegisdottir To be fair, Brexit failed because it was the U.K. leaving, the U.K. was always one of the worst E.U. countries when it was a member of the union, it spearheaded most of the worst regulations and supported all of the ones they didn't propose. If only we could also kick Germany and France out, those 3 countries have been the worst for the E.U.

  35. ​ @markdowding5737 Continuing my comment (an ad just cut it off), almost any "protection" law = destruction, intellectual property "Protection" = the destruction of any depiction of that including in archives, data "protection" is also mandatory data destruction, Europe could never develop any useful A.I. or algorithm because of Draconian "ethics" and "human rights" laws, most of these things aren't even done in the interest of the general people.

  39. Fun fact: The early anti-nuclear energy movement was heavily financed by Big Oil and the Soviet Union (the world's largest exporter of natural gas at the time, particularly to West Germany). Oil would have been worth almost nothing if every country did the same as what France did in the 1970's onwards, unfortunately nobody wants to do this because Big Oil made it political self-end to support nuclear power.

While volunteering at a mosque to teach Dutch I met 2 men from Pakistan, one was a genuine refugee and a survivor of a horrific attack on his life, the other guy was a fake asylum seeker and was rightfully deported back to Pakistan. On WhatsApp he told me that he'd short his shot in Canada, I lost my old phone number and don't know if he was successful. But these two Pakistani men were not comparable at all. Not everyone who leaves Syria or even the Ukraine is fleeing war, a Palestinian from the West Bank might just use this as an opportunity to make money or support his family. In fact, one Palestinian told me back in 2017 "I came to the Netherlands so I can make money and find a wife, there are no jobs nor women for me at home", he had Israeli family members and spoke good English (better than most Muslims in England), he didn't flee Hamas, he didn't flee Israel, he fled being a loser in his own country.
