  1. Indeed, in fact the United East India Company largely only controlled Java, Southern Sumatra and some islands in the East. Most of its "territory" were vassal states that still managed day to day operations.

  2. It's kind of sad how people of (partial) European descent were kicked out of Asia after decolonisation, in many cases these people had very little connection to Europe. Although I know many Indonesians in the Netherlands that moved here because of colonial roots.

  4. That map of the Netherlands is so inaccurate, it's a map of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands, the Spanish Netherlands, Liége, Kuilenburg, Cambrai, and several smaller imperial states, the Republic only included the northern part of the Netherlands.
