@1monki Still missing the point, the term has always referred to fitness (most adapted to survive and reproduce) and not to strength. The original comment simply points out that "Survival of the strongest" is a misconception and your comments essentially claim that this isn't a misconception because of another assigned definition. I would grant you that that's how all language works, words mean what we assign them to mean, but "fit" doesn't mean "strong" in any other sense, if your trousers "fit" it's because they align best with the shape of your body ("the environment"). Other organisms (including other people) are also a part of the environment, a good football player wouldn't be "fit" at a golf tournament and a curler wouldn't necessarily be the best at basketball. This is also why many star athletes in a particular field tend to have certain body shapes, basketball players are usually at least 5'11 (180 cm), swimmers tend to have a specific muscle growth, Etc. All these concepts are still embodied by "fitness", just like how being heavy built helps with sumo wrestling.

I thought that English-speakers actually understood that because "fittest" actually literally means "the most fit", if you're in a group of introverts and being talkative makes everyone dislike you then I'd be seen as unfit there, but I'd be more fit within a group of talkative people.

Also, fitness isn't general, what is fit in one environment could be detrimental in another. Cats aren't fit for Antarctica, but humans are (though technological means, but that's still fitness), if you learn to hunt in a steppe you can't translate your skills to a dense jungle and vice versa. Likewise, knowing which berries are edible in Europe doesn't help in the Amazon. With evolution the fittest is environmental, humans look the way we do because we went out of the jungles into the steppes of East Africa, Chimpansees are more fit for jungle environments than us. Evolution is complex because environment isn't just temperature either, it's also what other organisms are there and how we can adopt to either not get killed by them or kill them (this includes all other organisms including microbes).

@mondopinion3777 That is fitness though, if females would desire obese males then obese males would be the most fit, if females desired men with green hair then green hair would be more fit.
