Detonating z nuclear bomb is much more complicated than just "lighting a fuse and running" there are a series of precise things that have to occur from launch codes, to target selection etc etc etc... Then the actual detonation is crazy complicated, and I really don't think that the common person could get a nuclear device to detonate by "tinkering" with it. The worst thing that would happen is just what Jake said, the radioactive material could be scavenged and a dirty bomb could be made which is a dangerous scenario, but manageable.
