My grandfather James Burgess served in the Pacific fleet on a destroyer class ship during WWII, I have his naval "diary" including his dd214, and letters of recognition from the navy, his order of the golden dragon card and a slew of other pieces of history including letters home to my then father who was about 5 years old at the time. I don't know if his ship ever encountered the Yamoto or not, ill have to scan his documents again and see if it lists which ships they encountered.
