I have to hand it to journalists. Day in and day out they have to sit there, calmly, and treat some of the worst people alive like decent human beings. I would not have that kind of self-control.

what, you mean you don't make $200,000 a year plus $20,000 per speaking engagement, not including expenses, and have all of your personal and office expenses paid for by the taxpayers? What's wrong with you, you lazy bum? ;)

and for that 200k Chaffetz does maybe 3 days of actual work, which largely consists of showing up to vote, something you can program a robot or a computer to do. Talk about a useless freeloader.

the handful of celebrity journalists make that kind of dough. The vast majority of working journalists would be lucky to see $50,000 a year. I know because I used to be a newspaper reporter in college, making $100 a week (ok, ok, that was the 1980s).

it would be the ultimately irony and poetic justice for an inhumane pig like Chaffetz who believes in Republican social Darwinism at its most extreme.

it depends on where you work. A small town paper may not even take you on full-time, they may only pay you by the story. Many work for next to nothing to develop a portfolio. And senators and other big-name pols are more accessible than you think, many will invite YOU to talk to them for the free publicity, especially around election time. Again, I know because I would interview U.S. Senators as a college journalist. Also, journalism in general is a dying profession, many stories that you read now will soon be written by robots.

when I was an intern reporter I handled the police beat, which consisted of strolling down to the police precinct every morning to see who had been robbed or murdered the previous night. And when I interviewed ex-Sen. Ed Brooke on election day, he didn't serve me oysters, I assure you! Working journalism is not nearly as glamorous as you think it is. ;)
