  1. yes, we do. Medical bills would be unpayable for almost everyone without Medicare (and Medicaid). I can personally attest to that.

  2.  @sophiophile  the US already has a system similar to this, called Medicaid. Like Medicare, it just needs to be expanded to include everyone. The economy would flourish if working people knew that their healthcare was paid for.
