Ruby's so-called mental breakdown was a legal ploy by his lawyer, Melvin Belli, to get him declared not guilty by reason of insanity. It backfired, the jury didn't buy it and not only was Ruby found guilty but given the death penalty as well. He was in the midst of appealing for a re-trial and a sympathy defense which he probably would have gotten when he died in prison.
