I remember the 1976 election, I was 16 then. Much different country. CA and NY were not solid blue yet and were very competitive for Republicans. In fact, Jimmy Carter was only elected President because he won NY's electoral votes by a hair, due to Pat Moynihan being on the ballot for Senate and President Ford refusing to bail out NYC from near-bankruptcy.
