You can thank the Lima agreement for that, which was signed in 1975. Nothing to do with the current government, although it was Whitlam who instrumented it.

@vnewen2157 The US putting tariffs on Australian goods means the American consumer pays that much extra, for Australian imports. In this case, 10%. So it's Americans that will pay it, not us. The flip side is, higher prices may lead to them buying less from us, which hurts our exporters. The scary part is the effect it's having on the stock markets. Trump has so far, in 2 months, caused the biggest stock market crash in history.

So explain the tariff on Australia? We don't tariff US imports at all....
1
@UbFunks Tariffs are designed to protect local markets. Trump is using them as a tool, which is crashing the stock markets. Let him, I say, we don't pay them, his voters do. They could throw the Republican party out in the 2026 midterms, and impeach him for some of his many breaches of the constitution, this just makes that scenario more likely

That's a given

@dejanbojic826 Here we go. Trump obviously doesn't know what "Reciprocal" means, because we DON'T tariff US goods. We signed a free trade agreement with the US in 2005! It doesn't take much to find that, just saying....
1
@FartSuckerUmad I would bet that the supermarkets here wouldn't budge in their prices, unless a deal could be made with IGA or similar
1
@reinhardtburger7108 Oh FFS, how often have you seen that happen? Both are tossers but stepping backwards on a didgy stage is hardly evidence of some sort of dementia
1
100% true!
1
We charge zero tariffs on US goods. Does nobody understand this?? Trump calls them "Reciprocal" because he either doesn't understand what it means or is just bullshitting to justify his actions. Either is likely.
1
Yes, gold star for you!
1
GST is charged on everything in Australia, not just imports. It has nothing to do with tariffs.
1
@bruceli9094 by getting rid of income. I think you drank too much orange kool-aid
1
Tell us you don't know how tariffs work, without saying so....
1
GST has nothing to do with tariffs, get a clue. GST is charged on goods made here in Australia, too, you know....
1
It's more the damage trump has done to the stock markets from doing this, than Australia hurting from tariffs. They will hurt American consumers the most, not us.
1
You have to be related to Kyle, with that logic...
1
Another clueless one....
1
Why would they have to do that??
1
Unless you got fired by him, for no reason, other than he didn't know what you do
1
We banned their beef because they had an outbreak of Mad Cow Disease, which we have never had in Australia, and don't want, because it would decimate our whole industry.
1
@reinhardtburger7108 I bet he could at least spell "OFF"
