  1. I think that thread's too far gone for that, personally. It's a critical component, I would replace the sub frame or remove it and have it repaired (Welded and re-tapped)

  2. This was a lesson learnt I think - going to a great effort trying to save the customer some money ends up costing you money, more often than not. Unfortunate to have to replace the subframe but that's the only real proper repair, and it sounds harsh but it's the customer's problem, not yours. I'd be worried about the public liability aspect, should the replacement bolt fail. As for boats, if you can't afford to buy a new one then you sure as hell can't afford to maintain an old one - BOAT stands for Bankruptcy On A Trailer ;)
