@skullandcrossbones65 agreed, I work in this area for the DoT, a “Truck” has to have a GVM of over 4500 kg to me, or possibly a Mitsubishi Canter, which is a 6 tonne truck downgraded to 4495 so it can be driven on a car license. Anything smaller is a Ute 😏

I think "Truck" is slowly creeping into Aussie language now since we started getting things like Silverado, Dodge Ram, etc. They are too big to be called a ute and in a lot of cases are over 4.5 t and need a heavy vehicle license to drive (Light rigid). Sad but true ;)

@davidmc105 So a 2WD Hilux with a well body isn't a ute because the tray is removable? OK...

I've never called a Hilux anything but a ute lol. The only thing I would call a truck would be a heavy goods vehicle (Prime mover, 10 yarder, etc) or possibly a Silverado/Ram, etc, but even then I cringe saying it

@Reneesillycar74 It's based off the GVM, which is the maximum weight the vehicle can be when it is fully loaded. If the vehicle is imported from the US the GVM is over that, but in a lot of cases the GVM gets downgraded back to 4.5 tonne or less to allow it to be driven on a C class license. I deal with these every day in my job (DoT)

@davidmc105 no biggie mate, I’m just genuinely interested in what people call them. I think it might depend on what state you’re in, judging by other comments and what I’ve seen from other states. I work in vehicle licensing and we only call light vehicles with a tray a Ute or a Table top here, but I have noticed that some vehicles from QLD for example, have their body types recorded as Truck. Peace
