  3. The crazy thing about Youngstown is that much of the east side was never even built before it was "abandoned". Mainly over by Jacobs Road and the Sharon Line. They laid all the streets and infrastructure planning for future growth, and then the steel industry went all to hell and Sheet & Tube left town. The city closed off many of those streets over there, but some of them are still open and it's crazy to drive down them and think that not only are they abandoned, but that nothing ever even existed there.

  4. For what it's worth, I don't think Franklin Terrace is all that bad of an area. I seldom hear anything on the news about crime or other incidents taking place over there. And the few times I've driven past it lately, it looks like the people who live there take care of their community. It's definitely not something that comes to mind when I think of the "projects". Parts of the West Side have been getting progressively worse, especially around 18th Street, and the area around West 26th Street between Liberty and Greengarden is slowly starting to go downhill. The "East 20s" still have their share of crime. And the Lower East Side and Buffalo Road are still a little rough around the edges. But by and large, Erie isn't really all that bad. Especially when you think of other cities our size such as Youngstown and Flint.

  5. The sad truth: of cities that size, only Flint and East St. Louis are worse places than Youngstown. The silver lining: of those three cities, Youngstown is by far in the best position to turn things around and try to make a comeback. The other two cities are too far gone. Youngstown is not. There are still many strengths to build on for the city to reinvent itself.

  6. The American side IS the hood, in its entirety. The park and the immediate areas around it are okay, but the further away from rhe Falls you get and the higher the numbers get on the streets, it gets progressively worse in a hurry. What's more, you also have Love Canal on the far east side of the city just off the LaSalle Expressway. It's not the most dangerous part of the city in terms of crime, but is dangerous for being hazardous to your health. You can Google the history of that neighborhood for more context. Nobody lives there anymore, aside from one or two houses mish-mashed on various streets.

  9. I think tourism is what kept Erie from turning into Youngstown or Flint. People who live here might not have much money to do stuff, but millions of people who live elsewhere that DO come here all the time.

  10. Depends on where you're at. Once you get into Homewood and other parts of the east side, Pittsburgh can be really rough. And then you cross over out of the city into Wilkinsburg, and it gets even worse. Cincinnati has a lot of neighborhoods in the city that are rough, but most of the suburbs aren't too bad. Covington, Kentucky can be a little dangerous in some areas, and there are a few places north of Cincinnati that are a little rough around the edges.

  11. Pittsburgh definitely has some very rough parts. Much of the North Side, parts of the South Side, plus you've got Homewood, the Hill, and various other neighborhoods on the east side. And then you have some of the suburbs that are even worse than the city, such as Braddock, Wilkinsburg, and New Kensington. And of course, McKeesport. Many of Cincinnati's "bad" neighborhoods are confined to the city. You've got a few areas of Covington, Kentucky that are kind of rough, and some of the northern suburbs such as Lincoln Heights, but other than that outside the city the Cincinnati area is fairly safe.

  12. Erie doesn't really have any "hoods". Probably the closest any area of town comes to being "the hood" are the East 20s (mainly between East 21st and 26th around Parade Street, Ash Street, and such). But even that part of town is probably nicer and safer than the "better" areas of other cities. I've lived in Erie for the last 15 years. I've been to Flint, and I've been to Youngstown. And there is NO part of Erie that comes anywhere close to being as bad as some areas of those cities.

  13. I lived in Cincinnati before Over-the-Rhine started becoming "gentrified". There's literally no difference between the neighborhood in 2009, and the neighborhood now. Except some parts of it look a little nicer today. It's still really dangerous all hours of the day.

  15. Some of the highest in the country, along with cost-of-living and real estate prices. You can buy an entire neighborhood in Ohio for what you would pay for one of these houses.

  16. In Pittsburgh, it's not so much the inner-city neighborhoods. Go out to some of the suburbs such as Wilkinsburg, Braddock, McKeesport, or New Ken/Arnold. Many areas of those places are even worse than the city.

  17. ​@Apple Juice I've never been to the U.K., but based on what I've seen on television and in pictures, it actually appears that the majority of homes over there are row houses. Whether you're in the big cities like London and Manchester or in some small country town somewhere.

There are absolutely NO areas of Peach Street, whether it be "lower" Peach downtown and up by what they call Federal Hill, or "Upper Peach" out by the mall, that come anywhere close to qualifying as "rough". The worst thing that will likely ever happen to you on Peach Street is that you sit in traffic, or get cut off by some moron from Ohio that doesn't know how to drive when he's trying to turn into the Millcreek Mall parking lot. 😂
