Aside from living in Ohio for 5 years, I was born and raised in northwest Pennsylvania and have basically been here my entire life. It has its ups and downs. For example, Erie isn't the best place to live, but it's in much better shape than most other comparable Rust Belt cities our size such as Flint and Youngstown. Erie has largely escaped the rampant abandonment and crime that plagued those cities (and still do) in the wake of deindustrialization.
There's something for everyone here in Pennsylvania. If you love big-city living, you can move to Pittsburgh or Philly. However, if you ever want to get out of the city for the weekend, you can drive 2 hours and literally be in the middle of nowhere. And for those who want to live in the middle of nowhere, you have the whole stretch of Route 6 between Erie County and Scranton, where the deer outnumber the people. Same goes for the majority of I-80 across the entire state. Aside from Penn State University, there is literally NOTHING on I-80 between Youngstown, Ohio and Paterson, New Jersey. π
