It’s wild how modern humans are kind of a genetic mosaic of all of our ancient ancestors… like we didn’t so much as “beat out” other populations of humans as absorb them, so to speak.

@marjoriejohnson6535 I think both lol but we pretty much know for a fact now that we have genetic markers from multiple species of ancestors.

@BonusEggs4Sale I mean, probably impossible to know. Who knows what kind of interactions they had. There could have been trade and collaboration for all we know. Some of these “interbreeding” examples could possibly have been family units. You’re probably right, but I think it’s hard for us to conceive what life was like back then.

@Galdring Um. No? My point was specifically that we didn’t beat out the other human species, we converged with them - we made little hybrid babies that made more babies and then those babies converged and interbred with another species and made more hybrid babies and so on. We wouldn’t have genes and traits from so many different species if we’d just wiped them out. I do wonder how much different we are today from the first modern Homo sapiens
