@leandersearle5094 As a Japanese person, thank you. I condemn the actions of Imperial japan. But I also condemn the war crimes on both sides (including nuking civilian targets). Being japanese or east german doesn't mean you side with the govt.

@varana Exactly. Also keep in mind, that 10 years later from 1989 or 1990 was 1999 or 2000—the soviet union was long gone, with Putin being the president of Russia.. I hardly think putin would have signed off on such, especially with his "love" of NATO expansion. Gorbachev was their best hope.

@scubaad64 It's quite possible with the american connection, just as in other totalitarian regimes, your parents would have been arrested as "spies" and it would take years for the us govt to even act for prisoner exchange.

To those that say the national integration (at least politically) should have been more gradual, please consider the following: Keep in mind, that 10 years later from 1989 or 1990 was 1999 or 2000—the soviet union was long gone, with Putin being the president of Russia.. I hardly think putin would have signed off on reunification, especially with his "love" of NATO expansion. Gorbachev was their best hope. Sure, the reunification may have occurred, but without the treaty, it woupd be considered an illegitimate annexation or territory, along the lines of Taiwan or Crimea.
