Um, my 2 cents in. You're talking about 2 now extremely different cultures with different economy, government, education, etc. that have an entirety of a civilization supporting on both sides. Add in generations of separation and growth apart and you might as well call them 2 different countries that just happen to have a similar name and speak the same language. Trying to make them join is like trying to make any 2 neighboring countries join. It's not going to be a pretty process and most likely will end in violence and death (not even exaggerating). I mean, imagine if your country decided it should join with another, which is very different from your own and has a history of fighting with your country. Even if there's an international mediator, do you see it ending peacefully with everyone agreeing to what some outsider says? Would you give up any of your standards of living as a compromise just to join with a country that doesn't really want to either? It's that mindset.
