This report isn't very thoroughly done. You didn't mention anything about the statement by the shirt's designer of the meaning of the shirt being a portrayal of the tragic events that led to Korea's freedom from imperial Japan. Or Asian culture and dark history of WW2, which was different than what the west suffered and is largely unfamiliar to most westerners (as ironically evident by that rabbi's statement; "basic lack of knowledge of history's darkest chapters" indeed).

@Onion Dark Knight The shirt was designed as a portrayal of the tragic price of freedom. Korean also had thousands of causalties from the bombing but were suffering under the oppressive regime of imperial Japan. Japan isn't some innocent victim. Korea was only able to achieve their freedom because the bombs led to imperial japan losing hold of its colonies, which were being enslaved, raped, and tortured by the japanese at the time! You may find the image distasteful, but the designer used it as a message to show that there can still be hope within a tragedy. I don't see anything wrong with that.

@Onion Dark Knight I see what you mean. Although I don't believe an apology was necessary, I do empathize with your sentiment.

@notaspeck6104 And this is what I mean by ignorance against non-western cultures and histories. Did you not familiarize yourself with Korean culture/history before forming your opinion how a country should regard its own history? Or at the very least, check the designer's statement about his design? The shirt is less to do with celebration of a bomb and the designer's explanation of it is more in line with the Korean concept of "han". In simple explanation in regards to the design, it's a remembrance of how smt that ended up being positive/celebrated (not quite the right sentiment but close enough, ig) could only come about bc of smt so tragic happening first. Korean captives were also in the places that were bombed and affected by the bombing. Why would anyone celebrate that? However, there's nothing wrong with ppl celebrating liberation from their oppressors while acknowledging the extent of what it took for them to gain that freedom.
