  1. That's what gets me abt this, in particular. My concern is also the implications that are conveyed to the audience with swapping THIS character, in particular. The other characters would come across as racists, and worse, bc of the type of person Snape actually is, the story could end up conveying the racism as justified. He "looks" shifty, mean, terrible bc he IS shifty, mean, and terrible. Lily was warned off him bc he actually does hang out with the "wrong crowd" to do "bad things" and he IS an actual danger to others by his own malice. Like, what kind of message is that supposed to convey to the audience when everyone ends up being right abt him by also being bigots?

  2. More like, the characters are written as they are (mostly white) bc that's how the creator envisioned them. But in doing so, Rowling did not think of the implications of how the characters would've been perceived or how audience would have reacted had they been of a different race/ethnicity. So, audience perception of certain characters' actions don't get as much backlash had they been done by POCs. For example, I imagine there'd be more audience outrage had Hermione been black and was still advocating against clear slavery, yet was met with the same reactions by the white ppl around her. Yet, Rowling never had to contend with how the indifference and mockery of the other characters' reactions could be perceived bc the topic didn't convey as much weight in its implications with Hermione also being white.

  3. And then having their reactions being justified bc he's an angry black guy who had actually been a terrible person, esp to children who didn't deserve it. How did they miss that?

The fact that Snape was actually a terrible person (imho, with only some sympathetic, but not fully redeemable, traits), so everyone's negative reactions to him ended up somewhat justified too, and nobody saw this as an issue? Man joined a terrorist organization with the m.o. of oppressing minorities and genocide, only switched bc he ended up killing sm1 he had an obsession over (but was high-key willing to let her baby and husband die), and still aged to abuse his position of authority to resent and torment kids. And how did "an angry, evil black guy lusting after rich, white girl who didn't like him" NOT raise an eyebrow with anyone?
