  1. One famous couple whose story I'm pretty interested in would be King Gongmin and Queen Noguk. Theirs was basically a hostage marriage but they winded up actually falling in love and took the first steps to strip away what is now Korea (formerly Goryeo) from Mongol control. There's a little bit of a starrcrossed lovers theme in that Noguk was a Mongolian Princess while Gongmin was the next in line for the Korean throne at the time of their marriage. However, as all great love stories in history go, theirs was also a tragic one and a good lesson on why you shouldn't make your life revolve around your partner. Noguk died during childbirth (after years of trying to conceive) and Gongmin refused to take on another wife because he believed no woman could ever match/replace Noguk. He turned exclusively to male lovers instead and later winded up being killed by one of his concubines and her lover after he discovered she was pregnant (cause he knew the baby couldn't be his--though he apparently was only going to kill her lover when he found out). And he also completely disregarded the state of affairs in his government right in the middle of his attempted reforms and spent most of his time by his wife's grave, lamenting why she left him alone.
