It's rather interesting abt how gruel has historic negative connotations, yet I believe that congee has a much better reputation in history in the east for many of the same reasons (being food that's largely connected with the sick and/or poor). I believe there was even a Chinese emperor who declared to have created congee in the first place, so maybe that played a role in its favorable reputation? But it's pretty much widely seen as a "good" dish basically anywhere in Asia (or at least, eastern Asia as far as I know). It's def the go-to dish in my family for anyone who's feeling under the weather.
