The only thing free was oligarchs stealing national businesses and criminals being free to do what they want. And that situation was just as russias empire just had fallen at the end of a failing system. The west didn't grow prosperous in a few years, it took time.

Poland declaring war on russia would open up Poland for attacks without NATO having to defende them. But if Poland only send troops to help Ukraine and not declare war, then a russian attack on Poland itself would trigger Article 5.
