The US bombing campaign did cause catastrophic losses in the Luftwaffe, although the back was not broken until early 1944. As for the bombing itself; numerous studies have shown that the actual impact on German industry and production was far lower than what was hoped and thought at the time. Even when factories were successfully hit; the machine tools usually withstood. And infrastructure damage could be repaired within days. In actual fact the cost to the German economy wasn’t much more than what the Allies invested in it. Only the bombing of the Ploesti oil fields in Romania in 1944 had a big impact on the German war machine.
