  6. Comics artists in America who worked for Marvel or DC (starting in the 1930s) were treated just as bad if not worse. It’s not just Japan, everywhere else artists have always been treated bad by big corporations.

  11. Rogerio Pereira da Silva Of course, they’re for kids and teens. Modern shojo to me is moe. Yea, I don’t watch modern Shounen or shojo shows...but I’m an expert on any old shows, lol.

  14. The animation industry is basically dead in America. I’m not sure about France, but besides Japan, Korea is in second place in terms of animation/animating. You should really start making shorts right now if you can and post them on YouTube. I just graduated from college almost a year ago and have a BA in Art. I’m working on short comics and eventually in a few months I want to go into a series. You just have to pace yourself and build up your portfolio.

  15. Shan Do whatever you want, lol. I’m doing the same by drawing comics. (I also have a BA in Art) But it’s really sad how the both the comic and animation industry’s are dead. The only option is to really work your way up and be innovative, if you wanna change the revolutionize the system.

  16. Probably not. It’s the dude who did Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. He’s both a director and producer so he has a ton of money to do what he wants, I’d assume. Not a big fan of the music and the dancing scenes, felt like he should’ve used at least rotoscoping like he did in Kids on the Slope.

  19. Sleepy Pigeon I never wanted to be an animator because it’s a waste of time, imo. Extremely limited resources where I live in America. Or, you could be a mediocre animator on YouTube and make a lot of money (not my style). But yea, you’re right. They don’t want 2D animators, and it’s rare when they do want it, since it’s only for backgrounds. Not a fan of Pixar or the new current 2.5D that Japan has been doing for a while now, and will obviously compete with Disney in the future with that technology. Well, I’m a comic artist who has developed my own style and I’d say, I’m a good writer, only because I did massive research over the years and I feel comfortable with my influences. I’m still starting out, however I’m building my portfolio and aim to get an agent in the upcoming year. It’s either you have passion, like I have, which is be original and don’t copy others, or be a 10 year old artist who copies shitty artist for their art career. I’d rather struggle and make original art that has style and integrity.

  20. Yea...don’t waste your time. I have a BA in Art and doing it that way is a waste of your life. The US is the best way to work your way up with your portfolio and get noticed by big companies like Netflix or Hulu. If you really want to do animation, start doing shorts and post them on YouTube. For instance, Pyschicpebbles did the same and now he’s working on a project for Adult Swim. Just Roiland also did the same. So forget about Japan. Even Nickelodeon couldn’t get a Japanese studio to animate Avatar, instead they went with a Korean studio. Anyway, you can’t have that mindset if you wanted to be an artist, cause it seems you were just being superficial. This is reality and it’s not easy; you really have to grind.
