  1. "mpg is just gibberish to me" L/100km is gibberish to me - if I know how many miles I'm going to travel knowing how many miles I'll get to the gallon is simple maths. If I have convert to km, and then work out from 100 of them the distance I'm going is more than my simple mind can comprehend. km per litre seems more sensible to me, since I buy by the litre, not the 100km.
