  2. Dirtbag managers attract dirtbag boards. Also, HOAs for SFH really shouldn’t exist, so the useless structure attracts useless people. The board members and managers for my condo association are all pleasant enough. The only minor issues I’ve had, have been of laziness and/or incompetence.

  5. It’s annoying how all HOA discussions pretend that condos don’t exist. I expected better from John Oliver, but it’s the same rehashed arguments you can find all over the place. Like, I get it, because SFH HOAs are a total disaster. Truly the worst of both options, and no redeeming qualities whatsoever. But condos are the main way any of us under 35 are able to afford a home, and what do you propose instead of an HOA? An NYC co-op arrangement is like an HOA on crack. I’ve heard of three decker condo conversions having no organization, but then one owner can refuse to approve critical foundation repairs if they’re a cheap landlord or a cheap octogenarian. Then the building collapses and people die, like in Miami. And then renting is obviously even worse. That would be the obvious answer in many European countries, but tenants have no rights here. At least an HOA lien takes a relatively long time to go through the courts before you’re evicted… at least you have agency to modify (almost) anything inside your walls. Americans are so obsessed with single family houses, it’s wild. It’s like people don’t even consider for a moment any alternatives. And John Oliver is British so it’s really inexcusable. He wasn’t born in some soulless hellscape in central Texas, in something analogous to Plato’s cave.

  8. @WishfulCreation you wouldn’t want the kind of busybodies on your board that would do everything a management company would. At least for a condo board. Idle hands are the Devil’s playthings… these are volunteer positions. If it is a full time job, no one will run against the tyrant who doesn’t need to work anymore. If it’s a 5 hour a week commitment, reasonable people will replace the tyrant within a year. I also think of profit as a four letter word, but in this case, it’s just pragmatic. Thousands of HOAs do similar things and so a service provider can do it more effectively at scale. It’s specialization of labor, basically. And provides some checks and balances by separating powers. Our federal government’s four branches also have “conflicts of interest.” Having some conflicting roles can be a feature not a bug.

  11. During the first Great Depression, the sheriff would go to evict grandma and would find two dozen men with rifles ready to kill them if they didn’t turn around. We need more of that community spirit. The cops are cowards, as we saw in Texas so clearly. They won’t do evictions if they fear for their lives even a little bit.
