  2. So many NPCs commenting here, judging how he looks, how he’s eccentric. As if you’re some prizes. Look in the mirror. Very often, truly brilliant people have a touch of madness. I think Eliezer is in a very dark place at the moment, catastrophizing, spiraling. But if you actually listen to what he’s saying, I think it’s a very valuable perspective, even if I disagree. How can you give hope to young people if you don’t have hope yourself? Well, like it or lot, I think Eliezer has the answer. You acknowledge everything is not okay, and you don’t gaslight them. You show empathy and vulnerability, and be there for them. And then you start trying to fix things as best as you can. Plant a tree even if you won’t live to enjoy its shade. Go read the speech delivered to the poor doomed souls who were about to storm Normandy. That’s how you give a dead man hope.

The whole way we train these AIs is to fool a verification layer like this... Also, this idea of a universal verifier which an AI can’t fool? This is just a reformulation of the halting problem. Come on. This is undergraduate level material. These two are imposters.

  8. Dude it’s a computer program, running in a bunch of distributed Docker containers in datacenters. How could it have a subjective experience? It doesn’t have senses. It doesn’t have a body. It’s as conscious as your calculator. Way too many computer scientists had a narrow education. They don’t even know what they don’t know. Bring on a philosophy undergraduate student, they’ll have better takes on this than the techbros lost in the sauce.

  9. NLP systems are neat and all, but they’ll never achieve NLU. It’s fundamentally impossible. What is it that drives some computer scientists to waste millions of dollars and years of their career to rediscover some trivial result of another scientific field? Is it a grift? Ignorance? Arrogance? All three? And which one explains why Lex is spewing this popular science clickbait rubbish?

  12. It’s patently absurd and an insult to humankind, that you think a giant probability matrix inside a VM in the cloud could be conscious. Life is so much more special than that. They’ve tried and failed miserably to reduce our brains down to an ANN. Computers are wonderful and powerful but they’re fundamentally a giant, inanimate calculator made of rocks and electricity. Rocks can’t think. AI is impossible with current computer architecture. It’s a gigantic grift at the moment, calling glorified applied statistics intelligent, never mind sentient.
