The center is fragmented between the secular SPD and explicitly Christian parties. The far left and far right parties are all secular. This is a fundamental asymmetry. If the secular East is unsatisfied with SPD, they’re not going to vote for a religious party. Some will vote for the “good old days” of the GDR, but many are vehemently opposed to that. So, what do you do as an East German? You vote for the only Alternative. It’s all too similar to the way Hitler rose to power. The CDU leaves a gaping hole where a secular center-right party belongs.

  23. I think we unfairly pick on Phoenix as a nation. Miami is truly doomed, even the Dutch couldn’t save it. The water will rise from the limestone and there’s nothing that can be done about it. Phoenix is only doomed by its degenerate, decadent citizens. They let China steal their water in the form of alfalfa. They refuse to golf on turf in the desert. They all have pools and lawns. They paved over half the damn valley so they could drive everywhere instead of taking trains. These people are allergic to the concept of resilience. They don’t even have passively-cooled basements so they don’t fry if the power goes out. It is such anathema to the frontier mindset that once made America great. This suburban degeneracy is the monument to man’s arrogance. The world has many, many desert cities. Some of the oldest cities in the world are found in deserts. No one else but Phoenix so gluttonously wastes resources like they do, though. As you note — they use twice as much water as NYC, with their Romanesque aqueducts from the ADKs. Phoenicians are like a plague of locusts, stripping the valley bare of anything that could sustain life long term.
