  3. “Just learn a trade,” they say. Go to trade land, where trades grow on tradies! Why do none of these videos acknowledge the enormous barriers to entry into these skilled trades? If you don’t have a relative in the union, you’re probably not going to become an electrician. Those IBEW apprenticeships are about as competitive as Harvard. Oh, you also have to attend college to become an electrician, and you could get a bachelor’s in the same time it takes to get licensed. All this online content that pretends it’s some cultural BS preventing people from learning a trade, and not boomers gatekeeping and pulling the ladder up behind them yet again, is so very low-brow and disappointing. Most young people are going to college because it’s the only viable path available to them, apart from joining the military.

  4. Also, 99% of “trade schools” are for-profit scams. The thing you’re actually looking for in 21st century America is a community college. But hey if you did the tiniest bit of research, talked to some tradespeople, maybe you’d realize that. SMH.
