  1. So many noobs haven’t had the intense misery of debugging a large Python or vanillaJS project and it shows… they just hate that they lack the skill to get their code to compile. Well your bugs are still there, they’re still gonna bite you later, and it’s gonna be like pulling teeth to find them. Good luck with that

  2. When lambda et al works well for your use case, it’s absolutely brilliant. But I’m also pretty sure 80% of lambda apps are a victim of resume-driven development and just end up creating a Flying Spaghetti Monster in the cloud.

  4. You have it precisely backwards… with a stable library API, why not add types, it’s easy. The reason you don’t want types is because your library design is hot garbage and you keep piling more garbage on top with breaking changes.

  5. This is going to end up destroying far more IT jobs than ChatGPT… mark my words. Not for the “use excel as a database” use case, that’s always been horrid garbage, but for the data analysts who were parsing CSVs with thousands of lines, and making nice plots. Now the business analyst, mechanical engineer, or other generalist can do that within excel, without knowing anything about how to deploy production code, unit tests, etc. Just read the seaborn docs, it’s not that hard, we hid all the Pandas complexity. I’ve had two jobs in the past, that will no longer exist because of this. it sure hits different when past-you is the one being made redundant, even though this data janitor role was pretty terrible.

  8. Libraries are precisely where a type system is most useful… their reasoning makes absolutely no sense. The simple fact of the matter is, the JS ecosystem is a dumpster fire, with the blind leading the blind. Everyone who knows better is working on libraries for Rust, Go, C++, Python, etc. We’ve all had the experience of trying to influence people who don’t even know what they don’t know, and it’s pure misery.

  14. The Feds want to make this illegal for the same reason tontines are illegal: because it provides a direct financial incentive to commit heinous crimes. If the PayPal mafia rigged an election, they could buy up shares of their candidate, knowing they have a guaranteed return. It’s enabling any criminal to become an insider trader. In fact, per the efficient markets hypothesis, it ought to be an indicator of election fraud if the prediction markets are wildly overperforming the polls in a given territory.

  16. This isn’t a VSCode killer. It’s Jetbrains trying to retain their existing customers. And from what you’ve shown here, it looks like they’ll succeed in that. I’ve grown to like VSCode after using Jetbrains products for many years, but for JVM projects it’s still a no-brainer to use IntelliJ or fleet. Also their IDE tools for relational DBs are really unparalleled. You know where VSCode really crushes Jetbrains tho? Devcontainer support and Python data science tooling. Absolute nonsense that Jetbrains sells pycharm and dataGrip separately. Those should be the same product. Pycharm’s notebook support is rubbish

  18. Optional types are better than nothing, but even those of us who appreciate type systems will often be lazy and omit them when they’re not required. Oh I know what I’m doing, it’s fine… hubris and a lack of consideration for the next person to work on your code are the undoing of us all

  19. JS kiddies parroting the memory meme is like a VSCode user saying “emacs 8mb and constantly swapping.” Stop it, your new thing is so much worse, you just sound dumb. Java boilerplate is better than the JS comparisons and typing cluster… The biggest problem with java was that pure OOP is extremely annoying — many tasks map very well to functions, and very poorly to objects. But that hasn’t been true for like 15 years. Java has some functional constructs now, and if it’s not enough, just put it in a scala module and call it from your Java code, it’s all interoperable.
