  6. Trust me, if you can’t afford a $23 congestion charge, you would never afford a car in a Dutch city. The registration fees alone would bankrupt you. Never mind the cost of petrol is more than double in NL vs burgerland. Parking is outrageous. Oh, and instead of congestion tolls, they have speed cameras everywhere. Those tickets for going 5 km/hr over the limit would quickly overtake these piddling $23 charges with how the average nyc suburbanite drives.

  10. Yeah, as much as I like his toy simulation, IRL is a lot more complicated, with too many constraints to model. Does he account for the obese person who can barely fit in a seat? The person who sits in the wrong seat? Suboptimal packing of overhead bins? Hangovers and Xanax zombies? Empirical methods and A-B testing are much more effective here. That thing about high BPM music is brilliant! I also think the design of the overhead bins could be improved substantially here. Ex. How about adjustable bin partitions so that the total volume of space can be better utilized?

  14. No one is required to drive through Manhattan, unless they’re a truck driver, a trade worker, or otherwise bringing physical goods and services into Manhattan. If that’s you, your employer will bake the cost of the tax into their bids and/or shift your schedule to off peak hours. You’ll spend less wasted time idling in traffic and more time doing useful things for society. Road infrastructure costs billions a year in Manhattan. It’s about time they stopped wasting it on unproductive trips by entitled suburbanites that should be accomplished by transit instead. If your time is worth less than $23 an hour, you belong on the subway. Simple as that. How did you afford parking in Manhattan anyway? Probably by illegally parking. These car commuters are parasites and no one who lives in NYC will miss them

  16. If the MTA fails to do so, there’ll be private transit operators chomping at the bit to fill the gap. There’s already a large network of private minibus (aka jitney bus) operators in north Jersey to fill the gaps. It’s a golden opportunity for entrepreneurs to start a business. Cost of entry is just a ford transit van or three, less than a hotdog stand in NYC.

  36. There’s no good way to deliver bad news, and if you work from home, they’re not gonna show up to your house to tell you, nor should anyone want that. There’s also good reason to shut off access to all laid off employees at once. But it really shouldn’t be so much to ask to have managers give the person a call and let them know 1:1, instead of leaving them to piece the puzzle together. It’d take all of what, five minutes, for that manager to be a human being and not an invertebrate? HR is so paranoid about lawsuits and obsesses over all their hyper-formal language, and yet this automated form-letter layoff (and its cousin, the fraudulent PIP for stack ranking layoffs) is exactly the kind of indecent treatment that really motivates people to lawyer up. Bit by bit, any semblance of a social contract is shredded by these corporate demons, and they wonder why half their new hires ghost them now.
