  3.  @nvmffs  I forgot to answer They can't use the excuse of NATO expansion to invade another country because they can use diplomatic avenues to ensure Ukraine didn't apply or get admission into NATO. For example, Russia has influence with several countries in the alliance including the United States, like Hungary, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Tukey etc.They could have lobbyed each one of these countries to make sure Ukraine never became a part of NATO. They also could have offered economic incentives to Ukraine even if they wanted to be a part of the EU, incentives Ukraine needed, like lifting the economic embargo and giving Ukraine access to Russian markets at more favorable terms. That would have cost less then a war for sure
