The US completed its mission, donated surplus weapons to the Afghan army and withdrew in good order. Unlike the soviet empire which collapsed as a direst result of the rout in Afghanistan, the US was unaffeced. And yes, there was zero difference between hitler and stalin, other than the fact that most consider stalin to have been the more evill, and certainly the far more murderoius tyrant.
