That is why the soviet empire collapsed when its attempt to annex Afghanistan, the US did not. The threat posed by russist imperialism, genocide and tyranny are comparable to that posed by Hitler/Stalin Axis of Evil, and first the UK and later the US recognised that, and were ready to sacrifice everything to achieve victory.
