Meanings of words have always changed or been added to with time and are a reflection of the mindset of current society, don't know why conservatives think it is some concrete unchangeable thing like the Bible. They think similarly about the Constitution and law in general, even though the Constitution and law in general are meant to change with time in order to improve how it accommodates the needs of the people and regulate society healthily. It's also just really sad that this was all he wanted to talk to you about, and how he thinks this one brief answer to one topic, staying out of the gender/dictionary debate, makes Ketanji as a whole less qualified. Ask anyone what the actual definition of any word is and you will see them struggle with it because nobody has in their mind a 100% dead on objective way to describe it that includes and addresses all the gray areas and exceptions to the definition, or them adding on generalizations that aren't part of the actual parameters of the definition. Because that's what definitions do, they confine thought. Just because some new idea doesn't exist in the current layout of the dictionary, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It just gets added to the dictionary

If only they realized that the interpretation of the law needs a bit more meticulousness than just simply deferring to subjective "common sense". Conservatives are mad at her for not repeating their implicit biases back at them. Judges are supposed to rely on keeping their mind on all the specifics and exemptions and gray areas under legal language, and reanalyzing what that language means and not just taking it at face value and all the assumptions that come with it
