The pubs of years gone by were varied. As a young lads we travelled to many as word of an attractive barmaid spread. It wasn't really about the pub. Then as I got older I played a lot of sport. As part of teams travelling the district. We always ended up in a pub somewhere. My local pubs were split. You had one that wouldn't serve outsiders. If you didn't know the landlord. Or know someone that drank there, for an introduction. Forget it. Another was the opposite. The locals hardly went there. The other two had divided customers. You went to one or the other. But mostly locals. They weren't family friendly. No kids. Often segregated bars. That slowly changed. Some certainly had a community spirit. But a lot depends on the landlord and the regulars. Because I have certainly been in some pubs over the years, you wouldn't rush back to.
