The moment China became the largest economy in the world by PPP metric in 2014-16. The showdown with America was inevitable, because it's a common theme in US politics since Nixon that they should never allow itself to become the "Second greatest power in the world" (meaning they will stop any country that will be a challenger to US hegemony). Basically they want the war with China to be before 2030-32.(Which is the time when China finally becomes Number 1 by Nominal GDP index)
