Imagine killing more than 350-500 million people around the world in the name of Jihad and then turn around and say that Islam is just misunderstood or that is not real Islam and then further make a claim that "Islam is a religion of Peace". The same mental gymnastics has been pulled by the Left wing ideology which has killed millions of people around the world but the larger impression of the Left in the world is that "some of Left wing ideas are great" and Leftist are just Tree hugging Anti War liberals.
