Prior to that, Australia’s Black Friday came from something utterly different: It referred not to shopping at all, but to the devastating Black Friday bushfires that occurred in Victoria 1938–39. “By 13 January – Black Friday – the temperature reached 44.7 degrees Celsius in Melbourne, and 47.2 degrees Celsius in Mildura with very low humidity levels. Narbethong, Noojee, Woods Point, Nayook West and Hill End were completely destroyed by the fires on this day. The fires claimed 36 lives in Victoria on Black Friday; the total number of deaths across January was 71.   4. #2 is very weird because jobs are supposed to be trained for, not something just anyone can do without training. The Manager should have a list of trained people he can call on, or consult an employment agency to find a suitably trained temporary employee.

  5. I’m not sure how it actually works in Australia because I’ve never had to purchase a house, but I don’t think there are HOAs. I’m pretty sure that if you buy a home unit or any home that is held as Strata Title, you have to contribute to the upkeep of the common areas such as lawns, trees, laundry and any other shared sections of the property.

The Imperial System came from the British, whom America fought for independence and drove them out of the colonies but kept their system of measurements, which even the Brits recognised as flawed and outdated, so the rest of the colonies switched to metric. The US could easily do it because it has already been introduced, you just stubbornly refuse to use it! That stubbornness has caused the death of hundreds of people when a plane crashed: the metric part that was broken was replaced by an Imperial part which actually didn’t fit securely and when it broke, it caused the plane to crash.

  8. There are health reasons for keeping baby from meeting friends for the first couple of months. The baby’s immune system hasn’t had a chance to build up, so friends and even strangers who get up close and personal, can put the baby at risk from whatever bacteria and viruses those persons could be carrying even though they, themselves are not sick. The mother’s milk carries her immunity to the baby and those help to build the baby’s immunity.

  9. Ian, you know what makes no sense to me about #13? Why do you pledge allegiance to the flag instead of to God? “God bless America” but then you promise to be loyal to the flag instead of to God. The pledge also contains what could now be considered lies - one nation under God, indivisible? I see a divided nation under the control of corporate businesses and money, the almighty dollar instead of Almighty God. That’s like sticking your thumbs in your ears and waggling your fingers at God’s Omnipotence! “With liberty”? Where is your freedom? You risk being shot every time you walk outside. “ And justice for all”? Not seeing that in your court system either. It takes exceptional lawyers to defend you in court, and they come at a high personal cost.

  11. Gender reveal parties are a load of nonsense. You’re having a baby and you shouldn’t know the gender until it’s revealed on its birthday. That’s been the wonder and the surprise of having a child throughout the history of mankind. The only exception was Mary but she knew because the Angel Gabriel revealed it to her at the Annunciation. The other big problem with gender reveal parties is the impact on the siblings! By making such a big deal about the baby’s gender, the siblings learn to have expectations and that’s a bad thing because it sets them up for disappointment when they guess wrongly. Why not just let them experience the joy of a new baby in the family without expectations.

  12. I hate ice in my drinks but that’s for two reasons. My teeth are cold sensitive so fridge cold is just fine, I don’t need ice. Secondly, if you’re in a place - restaurant, pub or bar - and the ice is accessible to the public, NEVER put that ice into your drinks! People can grab the ice with their hands and contaminate it with their viruses, bacteria and lack of personal hygiene. You can get very sick from contaminated ice! Also keep an eye on the bar staff for that too. No scoop, no ice!
