She’s a normal Aussie with the average Aussie accent and most of us sound very similar to her. The slang stuff is a lot less than you would think!

The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race takes about three days of hard sailing along the Pacific coast. The entrants are all millionaires who can afford the big racing yachts with room and beds for a dozen or more crew. If you follow these yachts, you can bet on the race and it screens on the TV News, but otherwise we just make the most of the day off and hang out with family and friends that we didn’t get around to seeing yet.

We’ve always had fake trees, except for one year when we got a real tree. Well, never again! Sticky pine needles were everywhere and the tree died much faster than we expected, so we had to get rid of it, which was a problem in itself! My Dad and brother had to get at it with a chain saw so the branches would fit into the garden waste bin ready for collection. The most fun we had was when we were kids, Dad built a tree from dowel sticks and we would make the leaves for the branches by stitching crepe paper and sliding it onto each dowel length like a sleeve or a curtain onto a curtain rod. The crepe paper was cut into strips with pinking shears and scrunched a little to give it some fullness. Then we decorated the tree with gauge wire shaped into hooks, as well as screw-in hooks st the end of each dowel so Dad could safely hang the Christmas lights from it. Our family is Catholic so Midnight Mass is the most important event, then each Sunday afterwards throughout Christmastide. We had a little bit of Santa stuff but it was never the focus and even when I was five, I knew that Santa wasn’t real. Jesus is at the heart of every Catholic Christmas.

@eoin1959 I don’t hear that, I hear a combination of South Australia and educated Australian English. She enunciates like a teacher but when not on camera, I suspect she relaxes a bit in that regard.

@flamingfrancis That’s fine but it doesn’t change much of the spectators.

@davidbrayshaw3529 OH! I wasn’t casting aspersions on anyone involved in the sport! I guess my point was that it’s not something everyone watches on TV like, say, the Melbourne Cup. It’s not the only fun thing Aussies do on Boxing Day .
