The language is English and Australia was settled by the British so we use mostly their pronunciations. Some words have been influenced by American television and movies, but schools teach the British way.

We don’t know Spanish here, so we pronounced Uno to fit English rules, so: use, usual, union. We say fillet because we spell it fillet. Filet is the French word so we would pronounce that as in French. However I have always read Chick-filla because I never heard it said for many years. Vitamins (vittamins) is the correct English pronunciation but most Aussies say Vitamins (vy-ta-mins), probably because of the rule for pronouncing vitality, vital, etc. Cordial - corjil is to behave politely towards others. Cordial - cordy-al is a syrup for making drinks.

Mum is also British. We say mother as in muther, not like moth. So naturally it gets abbreviated to Mum. Hyundai in Australia corrected us for mispronouncing their name. We went towards a Japanese way - hi-oon-die. But the Koreans taught us to say Hee-unn-day. When Hyundai is pronounced by Koreans, they shorten the Hyun while saying every letter - hyun-day.

Once again, bouquet is a French word so we pronounce it the French way.

Carmel is a girls’ name, caramel is made of sugar.

Emu, music, puma, putrid, pupils.

We might taper off the r at the end of words, but Americans change a lot of Ts to Ds. I’ve also noticed that short vowels are longer in the US, which can get really confusing to understand which word you’re saying, eg, can and can’t. We say them differently but they sound the same in the US, so the meaning is lost.

Ian, do you know why we say Adidas - addy-dass? Because the name came from Adolf Dassler, who was known to his family and friends as Adi, so it’s Adi Dassler shortened to AdiDas.

Weirdly.

Hemi semi and demi. No one says hem-eye-sphere. Etymology influences pronunciation.

We say Nutella because it’s made of hazelnuts. Nuts. Nutella.

No no, we say Iraq as irr-ark, which is the way Iraqis say it themselves. Also Italy, Israel, Iraq, Iran. Listen to a native pronounce it as well as Iran: https://youtu.be/1fKD7X-mwg8
