Where’s he finding all this stuff! I’ve lived here all my life and have never had a tick on me! Doctors sometimes find them on little kids because they tend to play in the grass and with pets. I’ve known since I started to walk that centipedes were dangerous, that some plants were poisonous and that I shouldn’t play in the dirt. Common sense!

Americans have poison ivy. You can avoid Gympie by wearing long pants and boots when you go hiking, if you go hiking in unexplored territory. Stick to nature walks in national parks where there are defined pathways. Irukandji aren’t in popular beaches, you’re more likely to encounter blue bottles in the surf, they pain like the dickens but it only lasts about half an hour. There’s no effective treatment for the stings from blue bottles, so if the beach signs or lifeguards warn you there are blue bottles in the water, don’t go in! Simple! They tend to drift in on the tides and are gone just as easily.

Swimming in coral reefs is under licensed tours with a limited number of persons per trip. There are also warnings posted around the shore to warn you about dangerous creatures. Living here is not as scary as Americans like to make out!
