Major Frederick Meyer of the NY Air National Guard, piloting an H-60 Sikorsky helicopter, was on a landing approach to the Westhampton, N.Y. Gabreski Airport when he saw a flash of light and then an explosion miles away in the sky. Immediately, he requested clearance from the tower to investigate. As he proceeded over Moriches Bay and Westhampton Dunes, he saw a fireball erupt in the sky from over the beach. Traveling ten miles at 165 m.p.h. and arriving at the site of the explosion in less than three-and-a-half minutes, Major Meyer saw cascading debris —and then realized he was also witnessing bodies plummeting into the ocean.
