Yeah, it shows how bad Ukraine is doing - they are having very hard time taking Russian mobile defenses - i.e. Non fortified stuff. they also only advanced in one area. No advances anywhere else. I bet they reach main defensive line and call this "success" and west will spin it as retaking of 100 sq km of territory - huge success.

@eggnog9617 nah, multiple defensive lines, more mobile defense. Etc. They already lost like 20%of strength. They simply don't have enough.

@atthesink Yes it is - and its not 1 vs 30 its more like 150 vs 50.

@nudisco7882 so Russia is also doing great with their constant march in Donbass. Also if we go by WWII and WWI Russia is clearly winning. Both wars were won by the side that had better demographics and better production capacity. Here Russia clearly dominates even without general mobilization that Ukraine has. So you agree, Russia is winning?

Freedom for Donbas as well!

@richard7071 What?

@nudisco7882 You made a mistake from copy and paste - Kharkow is for east Ukraine - Kherson is on the other side of the river - look at the map. The reason Kharkiv is nice to have as it is hard to squize between it and Donetsk. But Russians have Donetsk - so each side has 1. There were few battles in WWII in exact that area - so all of this is very well know to anyone.

@malcolmt7883 Nah, they are probably using one of the guys that made concrete elements for apartment buildings. Without environmental taxes concrete is cheap. Steel in these dragon teeth may be more $.

@nudisco7882 What I said there were many battles in Kharkiv region. It is common knowledge and there even youtube videos about the battles, strategy employed and how it is difficult to go in between them.

@nudisco7882 What do you mean why not? Kharkiv region and Kherson has little Russian population. Bakhmut and Donbass has clear majority. Also in Bakhmut there was an opportunity to kill a LOT of Ukrainians. Also Kharkiv region is only important on its close to Donbass side - for taking back areas of Donbass - city itself is huge undertaking and would only be of use to pressure Ukraine. A lot of this war is just pressure through land grab. Kherson was too expensive to keep - other side of the river & constant attacks against bridges and the dam. Imagine UA blew up the dam when Russian troops would be on the other side. Since it was too expensive to keep pressure on Kiev that way - and risky - Russians moved out. So to answer your question, Russian MOD did what supported main goals of the operation. Why do you think Kherson city for example should be kept at any cost? Its main purpose was to pressure Odessa. And cut off from sea for Ukraine. Main errors of Russian MOD were in not convincing Putin earlier there is no way he can win without mobilizing some troops. Even now Putin is bending backwards not to mobilize more. Russia claims large inflow of volunteers... but still, maybe they should mobilize another 200k to be more on the safe side.

@nudisco7882 Nope. History shows that crossing that river is very, very hard. We have actual historical examples. Thus there is no need to worry from Russian side that Ukraine will be able to cross that river and hold right hand side bridgehead. As for focusing on terrain that is "key" Russian is doing that - they are concentrating on key terrain in areas where they have majority population. As for "long range" capability I am unsure why Kherson city matters at all - Ukraine has about the same ability from the north. They can also attack from the sea. I have no clue why Kherson city would be so strategic here. If you go to google maps and measure distances you notice that distance to almost any point in Crimea is about the same from Kherson City as from opposite bank of Dniepr river Ukraine always controlled. Thus I do not get your argument here at all. Every part of Crimea and all major cities are within 300km of the area UA always held - that includes Crimean bridge.

@nudisco7882 I read dozens of books on the topic. I am very well versed. Military history has been my hobby for over 30 years.
