One has to look at the fleet chart at the very beginning to see that there was nothing other for Germans to do then to die in glory - even if they managed same losses as the British they still loose. The fleet chart on German side is just too tiny.

@dovetonsturdee7033 Frequently you do not have much "choice" even when morale is low there is usually some young officer determined to die for his country. Heck, it may not even be *your country*. My great grandfather died during battle of Brezina on the Eastern front. Great grandma got Iron Cross instead of her husband and promptly threw it into fire. Moved to Poland. My grandfather, despite being born in Berlin, served in Polish army. During D-day many troops facing the Americans offered little resistance as many were ... non Germans. They lived in Poland that was annexed into Germany and treated as "Germans". Same with almost all Czechs.

Of note is that through Polish subs did not succeed much in their attacks they did force by their presence Germans to significantly limit traffic.

Yeah Taiho crew training as far as damage control was bad, Ark Royal through with her crew takes the cake - 1 torpedo sunk fleet carrier. ONE.

Main weakness of ship based bombardment - ships can be sunk. Shore batteries cannot be sunk.

Regarding Bismarck one has to remember that not only it got Hood under water but actually got a King George V class BS to run - so assessment who would win KG V vs Bismarck one on one has history to show us clearly that Bismarck was a better ship. Also if Yamamoto whom had issues hitting anything is not on the list why would Bismarck whom not only sunk Hood but also damaged Prince of Wales in the same battle would be. Also Bismarck was far tougher ship to kill then KG V class - Japanese managed to critically cripple POW with single air torpedo! Lucky, yes, but it took just 3 more air torpedos and a single bomb to take here out. That is it. One has to remember that 11 (!!!) torpedos did not take out Bismarck (it was scuttled) in addition to at least 150 hits by BB main guns! Certainly Bismarck was way, way, way (way) more survivable BB then KG V class BB. I think KG V class should be on the list if anyone even thinks of including Bismarck.

Poland had its own mine laying 2000t+ ship - ORP Gryf. It was armed with 5in guns and was a lot slower but could carry up to 600 mines(!). It was ordered for the role of mining Baltic sea against expected war with the Soviets. The whole Polish small fleet was all ordered up to face the Soviets. The war with Germany was not expected when ships were ordered.

French leadership was terrible. He did not care about his men. It should not be that hard to predict that the British may want to take over or destroy the French fleet in detail. At that point the commander should either go with the British or defend his fleet better. History shows that no large French ship was seized by either Germany nor Italy so British attack was needless in 20-20 hindsight and total loss of life could be prevented.
