  1. French leadership was terrible. He did not care about his men. It should not be that hard to predict that the British may want to take over or destroy the French fleet in detail. At that point the commander should either go with the British or defend his fleet better. History shows that no large French ship was seized by either Germany nor Italy so British attack was needless in 20-20 hindsight and total loss of life could be prevented.
