The problem with the design was it was not idiot proof. The emergency button was "dumb" system. When used properly these reactors served well and some are still on today. Obviously cutting corners all over the place was bad, not placing things in the manual etc. all contributed - but it was people that pushed the buttons.

@rinkashikachi Wiki says they are still in service - that is over 40 years for some of them.

@rinkashikachi "Most of the flaws in the design of RBMK-1000 reactors were corrected after the Chernobyl accident and a dozen reactors have since been operating without any serious incidents for over thirty years". So no serious accidents for 30 years - these 5 must have occurred right after Charnobyl then or maybe they were not as serious as you think. No one says its a great design - if it was it would not need so much fixing.
