She is unrealistic in her explanation. I had similar situation to the movie. Her idea of "spray the bear" and close the tent is a joke. Had at least one bear walking around the tent whole night, play with the bear can etc. What was I supposed to do - spray it every time? If the bear ripped the canvas then it would be action time - I am sure the bear would get a taste of ice ax and some bear spray from point blank range. Also the bear would attack the woman not the man. Usually the man is tasked with protecting the woman. Most black bears are too small to attack a man - when hungry they can follow the guy for hours (had a friend followed like most of a the day). In Ontario, Canada a black bear attacked a woman, her husband fought the bear off with a pocket knife but woman passed away from injuries before he could canoe her to hospital. I encountered bears dozens and dozens of times. I got stepped on one while sleeping. Been within few feet many times. Black bears are not to be scared off - grizzly on the other hand, full fear.

@rahman1314 Umm, this would be rather highly illegal in Canada on multiple levels. I.e. you would be charged with multiple crimes. Yes it works on humans better than actual paper spray designed against humans (which is illegal in Canada).

@rdel714 LOL! Black bears with few exceptions are not big enough to go after an adult male. Black bears do kill people but usually go for women. They do approach people regularly. I had a black bear about a foot behind me when I was having some chicken. Close enough to detect the breath on my neck. They also can work as a team, few bears played in front of me and my friends while the rest attacked our food stores from behind. You don't know the difference between a black bear and a grizzly.

For "Backcountry (2014)" Black bears would have hard time hunting male humans especially when the female human helps. Bear knows whom the male is and whom the female is - it would go for the woman. Also I was in similar tent situation - sure, its like the bear is going to tell you "hello, I am near your tent, please spray me as I will soon attack" - please, bear (or bears) walked around the tent whole night - what was I to do - spray all of them? Unrealistic. I also got stepped on by a bear when biving - I was awaken by the bear stepping on my arm. Unrealistic to expect the "spray from distance" - when bear attacks you like this you would spray point blank - yes it would also knock you out but I bet few pp would have presence of the mind to say nah.
