Yes, he was right - all of these are not even close. But in their defense they have insurance needs. A dull red hot metal is not really that hot and dangerous as a bright yellow metal. Dull red is temperature pp are used to - like in your oven. Bright yellow / white hot is far and wide much more dangerous. Also ball pen hammer thing was a bit of a stretch. I admit when forging a cleaning tool for my shop in a pinch I used a ball pen hammer and it worked. Its about size - I was flattening rod that was a bit thicker then 3/8 or 10mm - I did not need a 4lbs hammer to do so. So for small things it can be a good weapon to use. Granted it was in a blacksmith shop - so there was more choice. I think biggest problem is temperature - all else - you can do crude work with crap hammer, anvil like object. But it would be near impossible to work with steel that is cold in timely manner.
