Not sure why drive by wire is such a big innovation - does not seem like a big deal. It feels like another possible point of failure. It is complex, uses two motors etc. The whole design is good for maybe a sedan but not a work truck or off road truck where ripping wheels off and fixing it with welder is common. Costs here are through the roof - feels like a very delicate toy.

This is not true about 12v since 1955 - we have plenty of 24v systems - they are mostly commercial. Move to 48v will simply mean Tesla will be more expensive as all low voltage devices will be "special". Also a lot of down converting would still need to happen - for example, for towing. Not exactly sure how much copper this saves. Also not sure about 48v DC being "low" - it is getting quite high.
